Bioimaging of oxygen metabolism in cells

We have developed a novel bioimaging technique that allows imaging of oxygen concentration, mitochondrial oxygen metabolism, and ATP concentration within an isolated single cardiomyocyte with a subcellular spatial resolution. Using this technique, we demonstrated heterogeneities of oxygen metabolism and anoxic cell core when the mitochondrial respiration was stimulated at physiological extracellular oxygen levels.
